Ingredients:

Frozen fruit – Mango is marvellous, Strawberry is splendid and Forest Fruits are fabulous.  A Smoothie Tumbler full of frozen fruit should be delicious but you can experiment.

4 measures of white rum – 1 measure = 1 fluid ounce or 30 ml.

1 – 3 measures of lemon/lime juice to taste

6 tiny leaves of mint plus two sprigs for garnish

Optional –

A measure of Cointreau, a drizzle of honey or splash of natural sugar syrup to add a touch of sweetness.

Icy chilled sparkling water for extremely hot climes

Glass:A Martini Glass

Martini

Mixer:

Smoothie maker

Makes 2 (plus a top up)

How to:

Put the frozen fruit into the smoothie maker.   Leave for a few minutes to thaw slightly

Add Rum, Mint leaves and Lemon/lime juice.

Lime is best but lemon gives an equally zinging vitamin C rush

Zazz for 10 seconds then rest for a moment or two.  Taste and add honey or syrup to sweeten if required.   Then zazz again for as long as it takes to make the mixture smooth

Share between two martini glasses and relish in the company of a good friend or connoisseur companion.

These are some of our varieties so far.     Next will be Kiwi.   Watch this space.

Strawberry and Mint

Tasters Note – the hints of mint travel across the strawberry like a summer zephyr on a tropical morning breeze.   The miniscule fruit pips add a fairy dust crunchiness to this icy confection

This version is based on Mango and has frozen red currents in and on the surface of this delicious cocktail. A sprinkling of freeze dried raspberries for extra zing.

Jamaican Blood Orange

An Orange Daiquiri with no Blood! ….
Oh, and no orange

We have tried Pink and Yellow daiquiri’s so today we tried an orange Daiquiri.

This Daiquiri is more interesting for what it does not contain as much as its surprise.

In the old days it was a custom to give children a blood orange at Christmas – well that’s what my Grandmother told me. She was a fairly fearsome woman and probably read Grimm’s Fairy tails to children as well. Grimm by name and Grimm by content.

This Daiquiri is far from such. It contains no Blood and, curiously no orange.

It contains the by now ubiquitous frozen strawberries and mango, 4 measures of white rum, 1 measure of Cointreau, 1 measure of lime juice and the Jamaican twist, 1/2 a teaspoon of ground ginger.

Now, to get the ultimate pleasure from these slush kitties, you really do need to concentrate on the cocktail experience.

We sit in the summerhouse …. actually it’s little more than a slip, slap wooden panelled bus shelter with clear plastic glazed doors and side panels overlooking our garden and fossil paving and patio. Yes, we have real fossils in our patio.

You can sit anywhere provided you concentrate on the imbibing experience.

There are two points to note here.

Firstly if you do not know there is ginger in the mix you may not realise it until the second glass when the pepperiness tingles along the sides of your tongue and the roof of your mouth.

Secondly, we have made pure Strawberry or pure Mango Daiquiri’s previously. This time we have mixed both fruits and as a consequence, the tiny fragments of fruit which have not been liquidised are clearly seen against the orange slush on the sides of the martini glass. Consequently the imbiber may assume that the red flecks are chilli.

Not so. Chilli comes later

Christmas Spiced Cherry

A Christmassy iced cherry daiquiri. Remember, these are Kitties and not Puppies and definitely not suitable for children.
December Stop Start Spicy Christmas Cherry Daiquiri.

Daylight is an essential must for icy fruit daiquiri’s. In the busyness of December this recipe was started in the daylight and then refrozen.

Dear Reader, you are earnestly implored to check before travel, that is to say that you are encouraged to partially defrost the cherries and check each fruit lest a rogue stone should have escaped the pipping process. No amount of maceration with soften chips of pips.

Sprinkled over the cherries in various undetermined quantities of no more than a teaspoon were: Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Mixed Spice and Ground Ginger. By now it was too late, dark and cold to go to the summer house – more of a bus shelter in reality – so this fruit was frozen again in readiness for another Sunday.

Sunday 27 December 2020 was a brilliant blue sky and relatively warm day so, using our pre-prepared fruit, 4 measures of white rum, 2 measures of Cointreau, 1 measure of freshly squeezed lemon juice, two delicious Christmas Daiquiri’s were concocted.

Now there are three points to note here. Firstly the excellently deep cheery, cherry red festive colour. Secondly, the initial sharp and sourness of the fruit flavour which either because of the anaesthetic properties of the alcohol or iciness gradually softened to an adult sophisticated softness. Thirdly, it was not until the second glass – yes these recipes all make 4 delicious glasses – when mid quaffing it was realised that we could not taste the spices at all.

The wintery sun dipped below the horizon and up popped a cracking idea for 2021……

Iced Fruity Floral Daiquiris’. So keep posted ready for January’s Iced Snowdrop Daiquiri…..

Happy New Year!
